Overview
Swinley Forest is one of the most exclusive yet unpretentious golf clubs in the world. Royalty and aristocracy are regulars at this club just outside the west of London – to such an extent that it has been called the heathland Augusta National. It is an ‘anachronism living in its Edwardian past.’

Description
Swinley Forest came into being thanks to Edward George Villiers Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby and with the help of King Edward VII who provided the land, commissioned the great Harry Colt to design the course which opened for play in 1909.
Colt modestly described Swinley Forest as his “least bad course” and one of its many delights is the ambience, which is hard to define but ubiquitous. It is also unpretentious, having none of the new money glamour of its near neighbours, but more style than all other local clubs combined.
Up until a few years ago it was frozen in time, exclusive, unusual and totally eccentric. Swinley is not a conventional golf club. There are no captains, competitions and no handicaps. Preferred lies are a local rule all year round (the fairways are perfect) and scorecards and holes allocated par figures were only introduced as late as the 1990’s. But just a few years ago the club decided to open its doors to a limited number of societies and green fees. We believe Fairways to be the first exclusively mixed group to be granted access.
Swinley Forest is about pure, golf enjoyment rather than testing the best. What Harry Colt laid out is essentially what is left, with the exception of a few tweaks and the shaping around some greens. The summer swathes of purple heather and firm fairways that wind through mature pines epitomise heathland golf. Add in the crafty greens, with false fronts and cunning run-offs along with old world allure and you have the perfect Swinley cocktail, utterly unique and utterly brilliant.
