The Mere Mixed Pairs

 For the third year in a row we visited one of our most popular venues, The Mere Resort near Knutsford. This 18-hole championship course has the added fun bonus of its driving range being the lake. The only time as a golfer you are encouraged to get your ball wet!

Day 1

An incredibly hot and humid day greeted the group for our first day’s play. A firm and fast running course meant The Mere was playing much shorter than normal, so as long as you kept your ball in play, a great score was possible.

1 h/cap England International Sue Spencer & husband Tim in the first group out, returned and signed for a fine 41pts. The fourball from The Buckingham club of Doug Blomfield, Carol Mitchell & Geoff & Fiona Robb enjoyed a fabulous day. As hot as weather the quartet scorched around the course in 44pts & 42pts respectively.

Just behind these, the Brocton Hall duo of Ron & Coleen Painter had also lit up The Mere, matching the “best score of the day” posting a wonderful 44pts. Deep into the field and with the sun starting to set over the gorgeous lake, the ever-consistent team of Jim & Ann Green signed for a brilliant 43pts making the top of the leader board very congested as the group retired to enjoy a few well-earned drinks.

Day 2

The group awoke to much more comfortable playing conditions for the second round. The extreme heat had given way for perfect temperatures to once again take on this championship layout.

Straight out of the blocks and round in record time, John & Anne Wardle from Walmley completed their day with a wonderful 43pts. Out two overnight leaders had continued their fine form. Doug & Carol shot 39pts but Ron & Coleen had gone even better, firing a fine 42pts to go with their 44pts of the previous day.

Ivan & Jayne Hutchings from Handsworth had also improved day 1, carding a solid 43pts to hoist them up close to the top of the leaderboard. But no one could match the play of the Sitwell Park team, Jim & Ann Green. They returned, signing for the “best of the day” score of a magnificent 45pts. This added to their overnight score gave them a total of 88pts.

A brilliant finish giving them a winning margin of 2 shots and the title of “The Mere Mixed Pairs” champions. Our thanks once again to all the staff and pro-shop team at The Mere for taking such good care of us.
