This years UK 54 hole event took us to the beautiful countryside of Cornwall and the wonderful St. Mellion International Resort. Our competition was held over both the Kernow and the Nicklaus courses, the latter being the first the great man ever designed in the UK.
The weather for all three days of our visit was quite extraordinary, little wind and hardly any cloud and temperatures in the low seventies setting up a wonderful August Bank Holiday of golfing fun!
The first days play was over the “Kernow” course, shorter and slightly easier than its sister. The scores matched the fantastic weather, with a magnifcient score of 44 points recorded by Mark & Jan Evans winning the day. Hot on their heels with 43 points were the Royal North Devon pair of Jeremy & Ruth Horn.
Day 2 saw our first round on the championship “Nicklaus” course. This is a truly wonderful test of golf. The course demands supreme accuracy from the tee and with the rough up high around the green surrounds it was a demanding challenge for all of our group. At the end of the day 35 points proved to be the winning score with four couples tying for the lead, but after countback our eventual winners were Howard & Hilary Ashton from West Hill GC, Surrey.
The final days play brought clear blue skies, little wind and the warmest day of the three. Our group set out now knowing how to tame the “Nicklaus.” The Lyme Regis duo of Jim & Beth Rowlands-Rees produced a best of the day score of 35 points (with Jim letting me know he scored 20 points on his own on the back nine!) with second place going to Maurice & Gaynor Hastings winning on countback with seven pairs tying on 33 points.
Our overall winners kept themselves cleverly under the radar all weekend. Just missing out on the top prize each day, they quietly accumulated the 54 hole winning aggregate score of 110 points playing solid golf each day. Congratulation go to Joe & Pauline Nixon from Chelmsford in Essex who became the St. Mellion Mixed Pairs champions of 2020.
