The Vale Mixed Pairs

Nestled within a 650-acre private estate in the beautiful South Wales countryside, the Vale Resort possesses two fine courses, The Wales National and The Lakes plus a wonderful hotel.

Less than twelve months since our last visit we arrived in South Glamorganshire with the weather forecast predicting heavy showers.  Our first round was to be played over the Wales National, the longest course in Wales from the back tees should you wish to take on the challenge. We instead stuck to our normal yellow tees for the gents but still a mighty test at just over 6,600yds!

Fortunately the weather predictions for the day were proved to be wrong and the group remained dry as they all returned back to the 18th green. Low-handicap duo John & Gay Enos had finished with a solid 39pts quickly to be matched by Aidan & Mary Childs from The Warwickshire. The scoring was becoming very bunched at the top of the leaderboard when the always consistent team of Sid & Ta Cox took the lead signing for a wonderful score of 40pts. But the  “best score of the day” with 41pts came from Don Goss & Judy Ames from Royal Winchester. Judy had played superbly with her own score counting 16 times out of the 18 holes!

After a fabulous group dinner in the hotel the night before, we were greeted with beautiful blue skies for round 2 on The Lakes course. Shorter but tighter off the tee, the course requires more strategic play than The National. Amongst the first group out and back to the clubhouse in record time, Richard & Rosemary Kennett had raced around The Lakes to record a blistering 41pts. Hot on their heels was Jim Jacobs & Angela Allington who signed off with an impressive 40pts. But what of our overnight leaders Don & Judy? They had not quite matched their impressive play of the day before, but still recorded a solid 37pts. Their playing partners however, John & Barbara Taylor had played wonderfully and matched the “best of the day score” of 41pts.

This left both pairs tied at the top of the leaderboard on 78pts. In a finish that could not have been closer, the result was determined on countback with John & Barbara coming out on top due to their better second round score and 5 couples finished within 2 shots of the winning total.

A brilliant contest to kick off our UK 2022 summer events. There is sure to be more excitement along the way. Many thanks to all the staff at the Vale Resort for the superb service and accommodation we all received during our stay and for booking the fabulous weather!
